Programming for Gaming
| Gaming is a cutting edge technology. The lessons learned by the game developers are being applied to solving other problems requiring the same rapid processing and presentation of data. Most modern computer games are not written from scratch, but through writing scripts running/compiled on a game engine. OGRE is an open source game engine preparing students to write similar scripts for commercial game engines. Blender is the open source 3D modeling, rendering, and animation program. With enough computing resources, blender could ender a movie like Toy Story. POVray is an open source ray and photon tracing program. It allows production of a single still image. A student is well prepared for the gaming world with facility in all three programs: POVray, blender, and OGRE. The fact that all three are open source, allows a student to advance knowledge on their own computer, rather than just waiting for access to a campus lab. |
